Hi everyone!

I am preparing to launch my first Kickstarter campaign this November, and am trying to come up with as many ways as possible to get my message out there.

One of the things I am trying is an affiliate strategy. Is this something any of you have used with any success? Do you have any tips for a complete beginner?

Hi Karyna,

I saw you gave some good advice to others with campaigns, so this affiliate strategy is a good idea. It sounds a bit like what Kickbooster does, so you might want to give them a check out (and mention Hyperstarter as the referrer :) )

I think you should approach running a competition. So in exchange for them winning your product, how about they do something for you - like tweet to their social network, add their email address or share your link. I did a write up for the prelaunch stage at:

It all depends on the type of product you bring out to market. In general target websites that have large followers that like to buy similar types of products in a category your product falls in and advertise with them on their newsletter.

Kickbooster looks interesting. Would love to hear if anyone else has experience using them. I'm just not sure if ordinary people will care that much about a commission to promote your campaign. Maybe it would incentivize bloggers and other small media though.

I have to agree. If the product aligns with the audience of a particular influencer (blogger, youtuber, instagrammer, etc.) then it makes a ton of sense to run an affiliate approach. Especially if they clearly see the value for their audience.

Other than that you're going to have a hard time getting normal backers amped about sharing to their 100 friends and 1 might buy. I've run a few different Indiegogo and Kickstarter campaigns trying to work an affiliate approach but it just doesn't work for anyone with a smaller audience. They already know they can't get that many sales. So they don't put in the work.

The current industry leaders in affiliate marketing for crowdfunding campaigns are arguably (A) Kickbooster and (B) Funded Today's Cashback Network.

The latter is good if you want a comprehensive marketing package that includes affiliate marketing; however, you'll likely need to pass Funded Today's ads testing in order to get enrolled in it.

The former is good if you just want to hire your marketing agencies a-la-carte. It's also more flexible in working with your profit margins.

We've seen affiliate marketing work very well for some clients and not so well for others. It just depends upon the campaign. It usually does better at raising pledges than public relations, but not as well as either cross-promotions or (especially) social-media advertisements.
