    Review of Indiegogo

    by sbriggman » Wed Aug 20, 2014 9:13 pm

I'd like to get a thread started with some reviews of Indiegogo. Did you like using it? What didn't you like about it? Would you have chosen Kickstarter instead looking back?

Thanks for starting this thread! I recently started a campaign on KS. I'd like to launch another one on Indiegogo. Would love to hear comments from people who've been there.

I'd be interested to hear from people who have used both. I gave some thought to Indiegogo but launched on Kickstarter:

I launched my first crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. and was happy that Kickstarter staff answered my questions (always emailed me back).

I created both a Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaign at the same time. I have my Indiegogo campaign saved and ready to launch in October.

My Kickstarter campaign was unsuccessful and here's why i think my Indiegogo campaign will be a better fit.

    1) Indiegogo has flexible funding (if you don't raise the entire amount you still get the funds, although they take a higher percentage)

    2) Donors don't have to register for the site before they can back you. Kickstarter makes your donors register and it's a pain int the arse. Also, Kickstarter requires donors to set up an account on Amazon and it's a pain in the arse. You back a Indiegogo with a credit card or paypal, less red tape.

So, while I haven't launched on Indiegogo yet, I've have studied their playbook and know a lot about the site.

Thank you @FBK, that is very helpful. Are there any other people who have done both Kickstarter and Indiegogo--if so, which do you prefer and why?

    Hi,

I would love to hear reviews as well. While I am currently using Kickstarter to fund a book, I can't use it to do any funding for my nonprofit, Tapestry Institute. I have some programs that I am hoping to get funding for and am looking at Indiegogo as a possible avenue. Thanks!

    Hi all,
I've heard a wide variety of opinions on whether flexible funding on IndieGogo is a good idea- on the one hand, I've heard that it's a bad idea, since it removes urgency and eliminates the 'we're all in this together, and you only pay if we're a success' factor; on the other hand, I've heard from others who've had successful campaigns that in their experience it didn't matter much; people gave if they wanted to regardless.
Any thoughts from those with experience on this?

Every indie musician I know who ran a campaign used Indiegogo to do it. Most notably Johnny Hollow, whom I interviewed for an issue of Auxiliary Magazine on the subject of crowdfunding; they remarked that at the time, IG was just coming into its own, and the Rob Ford video campaign really put IG on the map. Auxiliary thought of using IG but their campaigns were more Kickstarter things, and I sometimes wonder if I should have gone with IG myself but it's too late now.

The fear of the unknown is what kept me from using Kickstarter instead of Indiegogo. I had no experience with Amazon Payment accounts at the time so I went with Indiegogo since thy used Paypal. The campaigns were success enough but did little in the way of exposure.

Since then, I have my books printed and available at Amazon and found out how to set up ythat infamous Amazon Payments account and it was actually quite easy, even for a low tech person like myself. Now, my first ever Kickstarter is underway and I'm looking forward to seeing if I can gain new exposure and momentum to my comics and musical with this campaign. Time will tell!

I'm very curious on this as well. Is it also a violation of some TOS if I post on Kickstarter and Indiegogo concurrently? I realize it may be frowned by the public but wanted to know if it violated any policies? I'm just in the beginning stages of creating my own mobile app and gaming development company and would like to run my first campaign soon as I am currently working on the visual designs and branding of said game. For a mobile game would it be better on KS or Indie?
