From our campaign-in-progress I've learned that you do not have to have great media coverage, but you need to get to the people that are willing to pay for what you offer!

It's hard to maintain a good momentum. It slows down naturally at the middle of the campaign. Need to learn more from the community.

    Hi everyone !
Thank you so much for sharing your stories and expertise !
With the aim of creating a product that would be put onto Kickstarter, I would like to learn from your experience.
Before launching on Kickstarter, I know I will have to go through a long process of preparation. So my first question is: what did you do when you first start thinking of using Kickstarter to promote or develop your project ?
And the second question would be how long did it take you to build your community online / offline ?

Thank you for reading and your time!

    Min-Hyung.

    Hi everyone,
We are a couple of engineers whom developed an awesome product, and launched it in a kickstarter campaign. We have very little to none experience in marketing (especially to the consumer market). We have learned that in this case a good product does not sell itself (we kinda thought it did) especially when there is no one using the product yet. This is where marketing comes in, and we learned that for launching a new tech product on kickstarter marketing might be even more important than having an actual good product. which before did not make any sense to us but now it does :)
So to wrap it up our lessen would be: focus more energy and time on promoting and marketing your product, than into optimizing your product.

    Tim,

Nice product you guys. If I may give you a little feedback. Having dabbled in the 3D printing world a little bit (not kickstarter) but something else. The industry has become very saturated. Now filament extruders are sort of a the "next big thing" in 3D printing space but I do know there are a few others out there so you competition is picking up. Now I take a look at your selling prices and 1500+$ for a filament printer is pretty much an exclusionary price point for something like this, meaning I'm willing to bet most people in the 3D printing world won't pay that much for one or would look to your competition for something less expensive, even if yours is vastly superior, which, by the looks of it, it is. :).

Two things I want to point out, you claim that it's the fault of the marketing, but I notice further down on your page it seems you've listed a whole bunch of tech magazines, I'm assuming they covered your project? So maybe that's telling you it's not ONLY the marketing afterall, it's a combination of price point and crowded space also. Another thing that leads me to that point is you'll notice you have quite a few donations at the lower pledge level, so basically that's people telling you, "well I like what you're doing, but I don't like it enough to buy one at your current price point". So to me, I would soak al this information up and learn from it.

You have a good product it looks like, if I were you, I'd research my pants off to try to find manufactures that can bring your costs down so you can lower the price point significantly. Maybe emphasis how your extruder is vastly different and superior to other, less expensive models out there, why am I paying 1500+$ for an extruder when I can get one from Joe X's campaign for 400$... and I would also look into putting more work into the marketing. If that doesn't work. Then put the idea on the bench and move onto the next thing.

    hope this helps
    J-

    Hi everyone!

    What have we learned from this campaign https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/19 ... rld-vision ? :)

Internet is worldwide but it's still not easy to reach people all over the world.
We don't want to use facebook or linkedin because we want people to react not because they know us but because they find interesting and necessary the idea presented by our project : spread the knowledge, responsability, implication regarding our environment all over the world :)

Still we have failed because we didn't find a solution to spread this campaign.

It's a lot of leg work for sure. I'd never be able to find if I didn't hustle and social media everyday. Just posting it on they're and hoping backers come will not work.
It's frustrating when you see projects flourish and you're trying to plow sweaty and just get funded.

It takes a lot of time to prep your presentation and a whole lot of patience for that first pledge. WHEW then no pledges

We are just starting our campaign but I would agree with many of the comments here. Make sure you do not just think that once you post a project you will just magically get backers! It takes time and preparation prior to the launch, and you need to make sure you have a plan to keep generating traffic throughout your campaign. You should be doing stuff everyday (sending emails to blogs, updating your social media pages, updating your backers, offering specials for your backers, etc) in order to maintain momentum
