Is Bhutan Really the Last Shangri-La or Just Clever Marketing?

Hey folks, I keep seeing Bhutan described as the “last Shangri-La,” this untouched paradise where happiness is more important than GDP. But is that just romanticized marketing? I mean, I get that it's beautiful and has a unique culture, but how much of that is just a polished image for tourists? Are there real downsides travelers should know about? Anyone been there and can share an honest take?

I hear you! It’s easy to fall for the fairytale image, but reality is more layered. Bhutan’s landscapes and traditions are breathtaking, yet modern influences creep in. The Best Bhutan Travel Guide doesn’t just highlight temples and festivals—it also reveals real-life struggles, like limited infrastructure and high travel costs. The country keeps strict control over tourism, so visitors mostly see curated experiences. That said, if you’re open to a deep cultural dive and don’t mind the high price tag, Bhutan delivers an unforgettable journey. But is it a perfect utopia? No place is!
