What age for single sex changing rooms?

    by charli55 » Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:15 pm

My Y4 son goes to a swimming club til 7:30am which is mostly adults, then straight to school breakfast club for 8. The leisure centre has 2 single sex changing rooms. I take him into the ladies where there are 2 x shower cubicles (which are always full) & 3 communal showers. He stands under the shower staring at the floor far too long while I nag him stood next to him to shampoo etc. Then he gets changed in a little side room. He always has a dither &
I’m always later dropping him off & breaky club closes at 8:15.

His old swim club only had poolside communal showers & mixed changing cubicals so this kind of mimics that other than a ladies sticker on the wall.

There’s no other kids showering as they go home before school to get showered (home is too far for us).

Today the coach very nicely asked me to start using the disabled instead because someone has complained.

Am I behind the curve on this? What age would you send your child alone to a single sex changing room without a parent/sibling or friend to shower? I don’t know the layout of the men’s if they have cubicals or not. To be honest some public loos make me anxious but we’ve been fine with me loitering outside of those for over a year.

Did I miss the memo? Should I have sent him in the men’s a long time ago? I think I’d be fine if it was evening swim club & there were a bunch of other boys in there & no time constraints.

So yes, wyoo on the age kids should go shower/change alone in the opposite sex changing room? (Ignoring your leisure centres policy if they have one)

I used to feel unsure about this too, so I looked up different opinions on sex việt and how it handles similar discussions. It really helped me think through what boundaries feel respectful and age-appropriate without overthinking it. Sometimes seeing how others explain things in different settings makes it easier to shape your own view, especially on tricky stuff like this.
