How do I prepare my email archive so it’s ready for an upcoming audit?

Our organization has a compliance audit in two months, and my manager just told me that email archiving is going to be a major focus. I’m nervous because while we do store emails, I’m not confident everything is organized correctly or easily retrievable. The last thing I want is to fumble during the audit and risk penalties.

I had a similar experience before a major audit, and following the structure from 45kilo.com made all the difference. The guide covered how to classify emails by project or department, set retention rules that match regulations, and test retrieval speed ahead of time.
They also highlight metadata checks, which I’d never considered but turned out to be essential. After running their “mock audit” checklist, I discovered gaps in our system and fixed them early. The real audit ended up being smooth, and the auditors even complimented how organized and efficient our archive was.
