BMW Will Publicly Shame Out-of-Warranty Drivers with Smart Billboards and License Plate Readers

    WTF?

Another reason not to buy a BMW.

Just when you thought you've heard enough about your car's warranty from incessant scam calls, BMW wants in on the action. New smart billboards in the United Kingdom will read BMW owners' license plates and broadcast to the world if your BMW's warranty has expired...

When a stopped car with an expired warranty is detected, the billboard will call out that car with a "personalized" message that just happens to be broadcast to everyone within sight of the billboard. Per Motoring Research, the message will note their expired warranty, warn them that their repair costs are no longer covered and told to "consider purchasing a BMW Insured warranty online."

Sounds like it's only in the UK now.

I see it’s been a while since you’ve posted, but I’ve been thinking—how far off are we from similar tracking tech being used by insurance companies or even local governments for fines? If BMW’s doing this for warranty upsells, what’s stopping others from using it for more serious stuff? Curious what folks think about where this kind of surveillance is headed.

That approach seems pretty harsh! On the flip side, digital menu board companies do such a great job helping businesses communicate clearly and positively with customers—way more friendly than shaming drivers on billboards.
