Investing in the US and then moving back

    by Zeero » Thu May 28, 2026 2:30 pm

Hello, I have dual citizenship, American and Spanish (EU), I currently live in the USA. Which is the best investment platform (Vanguard, Fidelity or Interactive Brokers) to invest while living in the US, so in the case I move back to Spain I will be able to maintain my investment without any issue?

Interactive Brokers is usually the smoothest option because they don’t force you to close accounts after moving abroad, and their EU presence makes things easier tax-wise once you’re in Spain. I’ve kept my own IB account active while abroad with no fuss. On a totally different note, I once opted to sell skins cs2 to cash out some gaming stuff fast, and the instant payouts reminded me how handy flexible platforms can be.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I’m curious how things worked out for you. Did you run into any tax or banking issues after moving back? I’ve heard some people keep a US-based account or LLC to make things smoother, but experiences seem to vary a lot. Would be great to hear what you ended up doing or if anyone else has handled this recently.

I’d look into tax rules in both places early, since timing can affect gains
I also keep records of income and residency so things stay clear after moving back
