Are fire-rated door installations this expensive?

We're looking to install a 20-minute fire-rated garage-to-house door as per code. I called up three companies and got quotes $3,900, $3,000, and $3,700. All three recommended ProVia doors. It is a standard six-panel white legacy 20-gauge steel door (no glass). We were astounded at the prices. Were doors always this expensive?

Then we called up our local handyman who said he can install for about $500 labor as long as we bought the door so we're a bit unsure.

I realize this is from a while ago, but prices can vary a lot depending on the area. It might be worth checking with other local handymen for more competitive prices or browsing online for door deals. Anyone have any updated experiences or tips for affordable yet reliable door installations?

I understand your situation—fire-rated doors can be pricey. I found it useful to explore options on a blog about fire safety. They offer a variety of fire door ratings and emphasize the importance of compliance, which might help decide between professional installation or a DIY route. It could give you some peace of mind if you're concerned about meeting safety standards while saving some bucks.
