I'm the human behind Island Granville. I'm a confirmed ex-smoker, nicotine free since 1996. My brain is still addicted to the routine, the visuals, the automatic motor actions, the smell of a fresh pack, and mostly the rush of the first drag when you really needed it.
For a few years after I quit I would use a placebo cigarette - anything the right size that I could trick myself into imagining was real - to go through the motions (lighting, holding, dragging, inhaling, even the lip flex while exhaling). It's amazing how much the physical routine satisfied the habit, and the ensuing endorphin rush from the physical satisfaction was almost as great as nicotine rush would have been in the moment.
So I accidentally found a smoking system one day recently in SL while I was trying to update something else. I think it's pretty good, and I worked for quite a while to get body dimensions just right for the animations. I got kind of a shadow nicotine rush the first time Island used it, more like a memory of the chemical effect, and I'm glad that I'm 30 years quit because RL and SL have never blended quite so closely for me before that moment. Island's first drag last month was simulcast in my memory with my own first drag in 1983 - It all came back, and I actually really wanted a smoke for the first time in about 20 years. Near miss, but I managed it. (/me applauds himself)
